Wake County schools to suspend drivers education program
The school system says the suspension comes as a result of funding uncertainty from the state legislature

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The Wake County Public School System will suspend its drivers education program at the end of the day on August 21.

The school system says the suspension comes as a result of funding uncertainty from the state legislature.

Students who have already started taking the driving portion of the program will be allowed to complete their instruction. Those who have not started the driving portion by Friday, Aug. 21 will be affected.

The school system has covered $500,000 in unexpected program costs since July 1 when the General Assembly did not include driver education funding as part of a temporary statewide spending plan.

A final state budget is currently being debated by lawmakers.

The district says it would cost an additional $250,000per month to continue providing the service.

Families will be notified about the future of the program once a final budget is approved and funding levels are set for the program.
