Troopers said two vehicles were traveling southbound when the tree fell across the highway, striking them both.

Officials said one person was killed on I-95 in Cumberland County on Thursday afternoon.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the accident may be storm related. It happened around 1:30 p.m. Troopers said two vehicles were traveling southbound when the tree fell across the highway, striking them both.

The passenger of one of the vehicles was killed, and the driver of that car was injured. That driver was taken to Cape Fear Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries. The driver of the other car was not hurt.

On Friday, officials identified the victim killed as 72-year-old Saeideeh Sharifian of Fayetteville.

The other names of those involved have not been released.

Crews arrived on the scene just after 3 p.m. to begin cutting the tree.

Southbound lanes reopened just after 4 p.m. after being shut down for several hours.
