Serious accident shuts down highway
Five people involved in a multiple vehicle accident Tuesday morning

JOHNSTON COUNTY (WTVD) -- At least five people, including a 2-and-a-half-year-old girl, were involved in a multiple vehicle accident Tuesday morning on a highway outside of Garner.

The accident happened around 9 a.m. in the 6000 block of NC-42 West at Wood Haven Lane in unincorporated Johnston County, which is about 2 miles southwest of Interstate 40.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol tells ABC11 that a pickup truck carrying an overloaded trailer with bricks and construction material fishtailed, came loose, and hit an SUV with a woman and her 2-and-a-half-year-old inside.

Then, a van coming in the opposite direction tried to avoid the trailer and hit another vehicle head-on, according to authorities. The van's front end was badly smashed, but troopers said the driver was not seriously hurt despite being taken to the hospital.

"All of a sudden I just heard this bang and I saw the trailer go up in the air," eyewitness Darlene Schmidt said. "Then I just heard bang, bang. I knew there was more than one vehicle involved."

The child, her mother, and all others involved in the crash were not hurt.

"This black car was right in the middle of it," nearby resident, Minnie Langley said. "But it didn't hurt her and she has a baby, but it didn't hurt them. She's walking around."

NC-42 W was closed at Wood Haven Lane for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene.

Meanwhile, Troopers have cited the driver of the pickup truck with failing to secure his load.
